Note:
To do a good animal portrait, I need clear, close up photos-3 or 4, in different positions, with some indication what pose you prefer. I like a good description of the animals character, and it’s favorite things to do, as well as your favorite things about it. I also appreciate a written description of eye color, markings, coat color, etc. The more I know and can see, the better the likeness will be. When you take your picture, try to get down (or up?) to the animal’s eye level for the best angle. Take your photos outside if you can,in good light, for natural eye and coat color.A picture in bright sun-light, or back-lit can be very beautiful, and make a nice painting. Coat color, however might not be accurate, as there will be a lot of reflected light. Another reference picture taken on a slightly overcast day would help, in that case, to show true coat color. If you have to be indoors, try to use natural daylight, near a bright window. A flash will usually create the dreaded “red-eye”, although some cameras have a red-eye reduction function. Try to get the background you want in the painting-something simple that will not deter from the image. I can paint different backgrounds, though, so don’t worry if it is not ideal. The clarity of the animal is the most important factor. The animal should fill the picture. Of course, seeing the animal live is ideal, but often not possible.
